Crafting a Vision: Aligning Values with Future Success

“Why do we exist as a business?”

It should be big, hairy (challenging), audacious (daring), and goal-oriented. Think of it as that mountain peak shrouded in clouds – while you can’t see it clearly right away, it inspires you to keep climbing.
  2. The North Star: Your vision should serve as a constant point of reference. Just like sailors used the North Star to navigate a ship, your vision should guide your company, even when you’re blown off course by external factors like economic changes or market disruptions. It’s the unwavering point that helps you realign and adjust your course, guiding your organization through the tumultuous waters of business.

The Collaborative Process

When you gather your leadership team to chart the future, ask yourselves some crucial questions:

  • What do you see for the company in the next 10, 20, or 30 years?
  • How is the company running day to day?
  • What are clients saying about your services?
  • How are your core values being realized among your employees?

These questions help paint a vivid picture of your company’s future. For instance, consider what the media writes about your company. Are you known for your innovation, customer service, or commitment to community? What kind of comments are your team members making at the water cooler? Are they excited about their work and aligned with your company’s core values?

By engaging your leadership team in this vision-crafting process, you ensure that the vision is not just yours but shared by all. This shared vision becomes a powerful motivator, driving your team toward a common goal.

  3. Accountability: Holding your leadership team accountable to their roles and responsibilities is essential. Each role should have a clear set of metrics or a scorecard to measure performance, much like player statistics in sports.
